You’ve Got Time! How to Fit Networking into your Schedule

It is a well known fact that effective networking has huge social and business advantages. But in today’s fast paced society, it may be difficult to fit networking into a busy schedule. However, since networking is an essential tool it is critical to make time to fit it in.

Instead of continuously putting it off you should set some time aside weekly for networking. This time should be dedicated specifically to increasing and maintaining your networking contacts.

Though attending the traditional business meeting is a good start, it is important to schedule one new opportunity to meet someone new each week. Setting this as a goal each week will open up your circle of contacts. You will be surprised at who you will meet as an attempt to accomplish this goal. Furthermore, you’ll probably be astonished by the information you’ll be able to collect from these new and unexpected sources.

Besides scheduling time to make one new contact each week, also allow for time to maintain existing connections. This means once a week make it an important part of you agenda to meet with someone you’ve previously connected with and make efforts to keep the relationship alive.

Remember making time for networking now will save you time in the future. With today’s hectic schedules creating a social network is a critical way to manage your time. You do not want to have to start searching for meaningful business contacts when you already need them; by then it is too late. Consider networking a good investment for the future.

It is also becoming easier to fit networking into our busy schedules with the advanced ways there are to communicate. Emails, conference calls, and videophones are effective ways to keep in touch without dedicating the time that a traditional face-to-face meeting would take.

In addition, it is important to decide who should be in your network and concentrate your efforts on them. While all contacts are important, if your schedule is time restricted try to make special efforts to keep in contact to the people who are most vital to your network. Also keep in mind, having a diverse network leads to an assortment of skills and information. Likewise, you should learn to be choosy and do not be afraid to say no if you do not feel like it will be a productive use of your time.

Another way to make sure that you can fit networking into your schedule is to do it as a group function. This means instead of scheduling individual meetings, or lunches with a couple of contacts, try attending larger parties and group gatherings where more people will be present. Using this strategy will allow you to connect with many people in one evening and at one location.

Learning how to effectively manage your down time is also a helpful way to fit networking into a busy schedule. This means making a quick phone call while you’re stuck in traffic or writing a brief note while you are waiting at the DMV. Since time is of the essence make every minute count.

In addition, the growing use of the internet for effective online networking allows you to network from the privacy of your home. Utilizing the internet allows you to connect with thousands of people with similar interests in seconds, making fitting it into your schedule more convenient than ever.

As networking continues to play an active role in business and social growth,
learning how to incorporate it into your schedule is critical. It is important that you dedicate time specifically to building and maintaining meaningful relationships.

You Are NEVER too Busy to Network

A lot of people errantly believe that networking takes far too much time in the busy day-to-day of modern life.  This opinion, though quite frequent, couldn’t be more wrong; it is through frequent networking that people make the most important connections in their lives, both professional and personal.

The old view that networking means that one is getting an unfair advantage over another potential candidate no longer applies.  In today’s world, you’ve got to go for what you need and have the confidence to ignore anyone who thinks you’re going after an unfair advantage.  Networking is not cutting corners, networking rounding corners off so that you can connect to others in the process.  Sharp edges leave the area around empty of not only competitors, but also colleagues.

Networking is what brings you together with people, and yes, sometimes they will be competitors, but that doesn’t mean that it can never be a profitable relationship for you.  Even if it does not produce anything of worth for you in the near future, nine times out of ten it’s networking connections that allow people to make new transitions and what allows those of you in the business world to get new clients and get them on a good note, which means that you will have no trouble keeping them.

There are many ways to network that involve minimal time investments on your part.  If the reason that you are not currently doing a lot of networking has to do with your perceived time constraints, then it’s time to re-evaluate your methods of networking, not whether or not you should be taking the time to network.

The likelihood of different kinds of networking being beneficial to you varies; for this reason, you’ve got to think long and hard about what you would like to accomplish through networking and then you have to find the best arena for networking when it comes to the specific goals that you have laid out for yourself.  This too, can be done by means of networking.  There’s no better person to ask about networking than someone who does a lot of networking.  Your first assignment is to network yourself into the best networking rings for whatever it is that you’re looking to find or do by networking.

If you’re looking to find a job, you have to start by making yourself marketable for the job you want.  You can do this by training or simply by dressing and acting the part, whatever part that may be.  Then you’ve got to get the word out that you’re actively looking for a job in that field.  If you’re looking for a job in business, you should network within that sphere.  Networking with Broadway actors is not going to get you a job as a legal secretary; it’s an extreme example, but you get the drift.  Find the circles that you need to be in, and find your way into them.

Yes, this all takes a lot of time and energy, but the old adage applies:  you get out what you’ve put in.  The more energy, time and enthusiasm you put into establishing and maintaining network connections, the more likely you are to find your dream job and to find it quickly and in the location you were looking for.  Networking is a way to make your own luck; don’t let time slow you down because the more time and effort you invest, the more you will be happy with the end result.  Along the way, you’ll make plenty of new friends and connections in addition to meeting the goals you had set for yourself.

Use Online Networks to Market your Own Business

Marketing online can be a productive form of advertisement. While online networks may not reach the huge number of people that traditional marketing does, it is an effective way to reinforce your brand, reach potential customers, and establish a bond with them.

Marketing your own business online can be a productive way to introduce your business, products, or services to a new group of consumers. It is important to realize; however, that marketing online is not quite the same as a traditional advertising campaign and should be approached differently.

For example, online networking circles are generally not very receptive to new comers, so you may need to participate and contribute to the networking service before you and your business will be accepted. Likewise, you should not leave the network circle once your campaign is over or you will be perceived as ingenuous.

Once you have put in the time and effort to establish yourself online, and have begun growing your network, there are several things you can do to help develop virtual relationships that are meaningful.

To begin, much like with traditional marketing, do not focus your efforts on selling. Instead concentrate on making the online public aware of what you have to offer. This awareness can be achieved using your profiles, signatures and your participation. Once people are aware, those who are interested will seek you out for information and assistance.

Another great tip for online marketing is to create a standard template for email and web signatures for all of your employees. The signatures should be professional and simple. They should contain the company logo and should refrain from being too elaborate. The signature should be incorporated on all correspondence to insure all communication reinforces your company brand.

In addition, you should link your website to the email signature to create a cross promotion. Link any of your profiles and web pages as well. This will maximize the amount of people that will have access to your website and hopefully that have an interest in your business.

It may also be helpful to surround your company or products with a cause. For example, build a community around raising money for breast cancer research or children with learning disabilities. This may draw interest in your company from people who may have not otherwise known about it. People are more willing to gather around a not for profit cause than a company itself.

In addition, as your concentrate your promotional efforts on online networks it is important to unveil a human voice. This means make sure that your network is not just made up of professional and corporate types. Include happy customers and employees in your network and you will attract a greater number of potential customers.

Marketing through online networks provides opportunities to microtarget as well. If your business or brand can be geared towards a narrowly defined group of people the internet is a great way to seek them out. The chances are high that a virtual community already exists and your target market has been conveniently gathered in large numbers at a single online location.

Keep in mind that you should not let your participation lag. The public will notice and feel manipulated if you only contribute when you stand to gain. This means to be successful with your online marketing attempts you must be persistent and consistent.

The most effective way to market your business using an online network is to generate a word of mouth buzz. If you have plenty of satisfied customers talking about your product the word will spread as your network grows.
